Attach the Inner Zippered Mesh Pockets

We will need:

For this step we will need the prepared quilted body of the organizer and the prepared inner zippered mesh pockets made in Posts #9 and #10.

We will also use these tools:
  • Sewing machine with ¼" foot
  • Wonder Clips
  • Stiletto/pressing tool
  • Thread snips/scissors
  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Quilter's ruler - the 8½" x 24" Creative Grids ruler works well for this step.

Objectives:

Attach the prepared zippered mesh pockets to the inside of the organizer and trim the edges of the organizer in preparation for binding the edges.

Let's get started:

1. Attach the inner zippered mesh pockets to the lining side of the organizer.

a. On the lining side of the organizer, position one of the zippered mesh pockets with its bound edge along the line marked 4” from the left. This will also coincide with the stitching lines used to attach the back vinyl pocket to the body of the organizer.

Center the pocket in place with the mesh on the bottom overlapping the visible stitched line which is about 9” from the left. Note that the mesh is cut larger than needed to accommodate stretchiness and wonkiness.

b. Making sure that the slider on the strap on the other side of the organizer is out of the way, stitch the mesh pocket in place, sewing first along the top bound edge, then stitching down the right side, across the bottom along the previous line of stitching, and up the left side. IMPORTANT: Be sure to move the zipper pull to the inside of the pocket before stitching across the zipper tape.

d. In the same manner, attach another zippered mesh pocket to the organizer aligning its bound edge along the line marked 9” from the left being careful to cover the previous lines of stitching. how to sew zippers

e. Stitch in place sewing across the top bound edge, down the right, across the bottom along the line marked 4½” from the end, and up the left side, being careful to move the zipper pull to the inside before stitching across the zipper tape. Be careful, too, to move the strapping on the back out of the way before stitching across the sides and bottom of the pocket.

f. In the same manner, attach the last zippered mesh pocket to the organizer aligning its bound edge along the line marked 4½” from the right, being careful to cover the previous lines of stitching. Stitch in place as before along top bound edge, right side, bottom, and left side.

2. Trim the overhanging zippers and mesh even with the edges of the organizer, being careful to first fold the strap on the back out of the way.
